Heart and Mind

Hanging out with Dad

This morning I tried to talk to Lily about George, and whether she was missing him for Christmas. She seems to be so carefree (except for the occasional tantrum), that I feel I need to introduce the subject occasionally.

“I’m 100% missing him,” she said, bouncing on the bed. “Sometimes 199.9%”

I’m with you, Lily.

Then she said, “I’ll miss them all when they die. The grandmas and grandpa, you, Sara, Scout, even Mimi (our most seemingly indestructible family member.)”

I must have blanched, because she said, “We all die, mom.” Bounce, bounce, bounce. “It’s an adventure.”

She seems to know more about these mysteries than I do. Don’t know what I think about the concept of an “old soul,” but she is one if I ever met one.

A happy time in our lives

“It doesn’t matter if he’s with us, Mama,” she said, “He lives here (she pointed to her head) and here (her heart.)” She stopped bouncing. “Do you want to play with my American Girls dolls?”

So we went off to play and she seemed just fine. My sweet girl, missing Daddy 199.9 %, but getting along okay, at least for today.

I’ll take a page from her book and try to see his death, and everything, as an adventure.

And I’ll see him tomorrow, on Christmas, in my heart, in my mind.

Merry Christmas, George.

Enjoy your unexpected, amazing adventure.

We love you.

We miss you.

We’ll keep you close.

It sometimes takes the uplifting mindset of an innocent and pure child for us old foggies to get through what we believe is and SHOULD BE a devastating life trauma (that is redundant I realize). Lily is a “joy” and thank you Lisa, for sharing her wisdom with us. Yes, LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE and like all adventures, big, small, dangerous and fun, we must grab every moment and experience it all so we can emerge from them, different and changed, hopefully better and strong people, for having the courage to take the adventure in the first place. Lily and you are embarking on yet another adventure and thank you for sharing your travels with us.

Merry

Hope today was good. I’m very lucky to have Lily to bolster me up. She is one in a million. I hope your mom feels better soon.

God bless you and Lily. Her wisdom is beyond her years. Take her beliefs and use them and keep writing and one day you will wake up and realize you have made it through this terrible time in your life and that you are o.k. Enjoy your Christmas and look forward to a wonderful new year full of new adventures. You will find a place for all the pain, I promice.

Love,
Sharon Mullally

We felt him all around today.

Merry Christmas! Focus today on the event in history that we are celebrating, the birth of Christ. George is with him today celebrating. He belongs to God, he was only on loan to all of us. “Let go and let God” I saw that somewhere and I love that quote.
